What does a typical day/week look like as an Audit Assistant?

At the start of a client audit, I typically attend a planning meeting with the relevant Audit Senior, Manager and Partner who supply background information on the client, logistics of the audit and expected work to be completed. After this, I work with the Audit Senior to complete the audit file, liaising with the client in order to receive the information required.

What types of industries and clients do you work with?

My favourite clients to audit so far has been the Colleges, as the majority require us to be on-site, which allows us to meet the whole team.

When I first started, businesses were transitioning back from the pandemic and the College year ends had not happened yet. As a result, the majority of the audit work was remote but over the last couple of months this has all changed, with us moving to more on-site audits which is preferred. We can put a face to the names we’ve been speaking to which is a great opportunity to build relationships with clients; lunch is usually provided too!

What do you enjoy most?

The most enjoyable aspect of working in a team at Critchleys is the variation. The Audit team is a great size, so you get to work with numerous seniors over different jobs, with the same community sense that everyone shares.

What has surprised you most since joining?

The most surprising aspect of Critchleys is how integrated the Firm is. There is a very strong family/community vibe, that makes you feel like you belong to something bigger. There are usually socials organised every month, both firmwide and in departments so everything feels very integrated.

Your development at Critchleys so far?

My overall knowledge in audit has significantly increased and continues to do so. I have also started my level 7 apprenticeship to complete my ACA studies, with my first exam commencing in the new year.

What advice would you give someone at the start of their career?

There is no such thing as too many questions. If you are unsure of something make sure to ask, Critchleys is investing in you so the more you expand on things unsure to yourself the more it helps the company as a whole. Everyone is there to help and happy to do so, so try not to let your nerves get in the way of that.
