What does a typical day/week look like for a Tax Associate?
I prepare and complete tax returns for multiple clients, including individuals, businesses and companies - analysing financial accounts to allow me to input the data onto tax returns.
I manage my own workload and deadlines, keeping up to date with my client portfolio, and corresponding with HMRC regularly. Communicating with my colleagues multiple times a day, sharing insights, and working through tax issues to benefit our clients.
What types of industries and clients do you work with?
I work in the Business Tax team, therefore helping companies, sole traders, and individuals to minimise their tax liabilities.
My client portfolio has grown recently to an estimated 100 individuals, 6 partnerships and 70 charities, colleges, and companies. Correspondence varies depending the clients preferred method of communication and the most effective way of obtaining a result.
What do you enjoy most?
The Business Tax and Private Client tax teams work closely together, and each colleague is great! Working alongside dedicated colleagues is inspiring and motivating in the profession.
Your development at Critchleys so far?
Since starting my role in April 2021, I have passed all required ATT exams to gain the qualification and recently completed the apprenticeship which accompanied the qualification.
I am now focusing on gaining experience in my role and building relationships with my client portfolio. In the future, I am aiming to continue my education and work towards my CTA qualification.
What advice would you give someone at the start of their career?
I would advise to invest time in studying and learning, as the tax laws are constantly evolving and keep open minded to changes that come into play.
