Why do I need a Registered Office?

Why do I need a Registered Office?

What is it?

A registered office is an address used by a company as their principal business address. The registered office is usually used as a correspondence address for the delivery of post and documents and is the address that is listed with Companies House on public record. Your registered office can be the same as your trading address, or it can be a nominated address elsewhere.

Who is it for?

UK based limited companies, LLP’s and other entities.

How does it work?

A registered office address is registered with Companies House and shown on their website as the company’s principal business address. This information is publicly available to view as it helps to promote corporate transparency.

A number of privately owned companies are owned and run by individuals from their home addresses; and a majority of these will use their home address as the company’s registered address. However, doing so means their home address is visible on public record. Most companies that use  registered office will also use the same address for their directors’ “service” addresses.

Using a registered office address will enable you to protect your personal address from being recorded in the public domain. Choosing the right registered office address can also add an element of prestige or professionalism to your company.

What should I do next?

You should consider if you are comfortable with using your home address as your company’s business address. You should also check any tenancy/mortgage agreements which sometimes prohibit the running of a business from the address.

You should also ensure that your registered office is displayed on the company’s invoices, statements, correspondence, and other marketing material, as well as the company’s website.  If you do need to change your registered office address with Companies House; you should remember to update your company documents as well.
